Temporal Evolution of Island Arc Magmatism and Its Influence on Long-Term Climate: Insights From the Izu Intra-Oceanic Arc

چکیده

Continental arcs have an episodic magmatic activity over long-time periods, which is believed to modulate long-term climate. Island also the potential release large amount of CO 2 into atmosphere, but whether they display history throughout their lifespan that contributes (>10 Ma) climate changes remains open question. To set additional constraints on island arcs, here we examine fresh basalts and mineral-hosted melt inclusions from Izu intra-oceanic arc, shortly after eruption boninites (∼45 Ma ago). Using chemical markers, show mature arc has been relatively continuous its lifespan, except during opening Shikoku back-arc Basin (∼23–20 Ma). Because slab dehydration melting trigger decarbonation carbonate dissolution subducted plate, use slab-fluid markers (Ba/Th, Cs/Th, Cs/Ba, Rb/Th, Th/Nb) variations slab-derived captured by magmas. The steadiness in contribution suggests outgassed volcanism may remained homogeneous for past 40 Izu. If worldwide maintain a steady-state these volcanoes be rapidly balanced weathering tectonic erosion, draw down atmospheric (within 200–300 kyr). This rapid negative feedback volcanic degassing permits sustain viable millions years. lack co-variations between (δ 13 O, δ 18 C) averages fluids further implies might play minor role slide icehouse climatic conditions. stability be, instead, contributor maintaining broadly stable long timescales.

The Evolution of Long-term Care Programs; Comment on “Financing Long-term Care: Lessons From Japan”

The need for long-term care (LTC) represents a “new social risk,” one that overlaps with and complements systems of care that pre-date such programs, complicating LTC program design. This commentary expands on Ikegami’s discussion of how these structural factors must be accommodated, as well as historical and cultural factors that influence public expectations of such a...

Across-arc geochemical trends in the Izu-Bonin arc: Contributions from the subducting slab

[1] Abstract: We propose that across-arc differences in the geochemistry of Izu-Bonin arc magmas are controlled by the addition of fertile-slab fluids to depleted mantle at the volcanic front, and residual-slab fluids to fertile mantle in the back arc without slab melting or contemporaneous back arc spreading. The arc consists of a volcanic front, an extensional zone, and seamount chains (the W...

Metamorphic devolatilization of subducted oceanic metabasalts : implications for seismicity, arc magmatism and volatile recycling

Subducted oceanic metabasalts are believed to be a primary source of volatiles for arc magmatism and fluid-induced seismicity. From phase equilibria computed for an average oceanic metabasalt we present a model for subduction zone devolatilization for pressures up to 6 GPa (V180 km). Along high temperature geotherms complete dehydration occurs under forearcs, whereas dehydration does not occur ...
